Они останавливались каждый час, точнее каждые 60 минут, так чтобы можно было достать антенну, и сотовый телефон мог работать в горах. Гай звонил Стефано, который был в его бюро с Гамильтоном Джейнсом и большой шишкой в Министерстве Иностранных Дел. Велись консультации и с Пентагоном.
Что за чертовщина происходит, хотел спросить Гай. Откуда взялись федералы? За первые шесть часов они проехали сотню миль. Время от времени дорога становилась почти непроходимой. Они часто воевали с телефоном, пытаясь дозвонится в Вашингтон. К двум часам дня они покинули горы и дорога улучшилась.
Вопрос экстрадиции был сложный и Гамильтон Джейнс категорически возражал против нее. Пришлось искать обходные пути . Директор ФБР провел телефонный разговор с руководителем администрации президента, в результате чего к операции подключили американского посла в Парагвае.
Подозреваемый с деньгами и решимостью мог приостановить экстрадицию из Парагвая на годы, если не навсегда. Но в данном случае подозреваемый не имел при себе ни цента и даже не знал, где именно он находится.
Парагвайцы неохотно согласились проигнорировать экстрадицию. В четыре Стефано проинструктировал Гая как найти аэропорт в Консепсионе в маленьком городке, находящемся в трех часах езды на машине от Асуньсьена. Водитель бразилец выругался по-португальски, когда ему сказали поворачивать обратно и ехать на север.

Как сделать выбор: надо или не надо упоминать человека, выслушивающего чужую речь.

2.86 При наличии некоторых глаголов — сигналов прямой и косвенной речи мы обычно упоминаем человека, выслушивающего чужую речь, при условии, что эти сигналы используются в каком-то одном виде структуры, но не обязательно, если они попадают в другой тип структуры.
Наиболее распространённым из этих глаголов является 'tell'. Когда данный глагол используется с цитатой или когда он употреблён в каком-либо обороте, связанном с косвенной речью, или же когда 'tell' используется самостоятельно, мы обычно упоминаем того, кто выслушивает обращённую к нему речь. Обратите внимание на следующее: человек (один или несколько), выслушивающий чужую речь, может выступать в роли подлежащего при глаголе, употреблённом в пассиве, как это имеет место в последних двух примерах из числа приведённых ниже.

When she heard the girl was missing, she told her mum: 'I know where she is.'
He told me he would look for another job.
The doctor told him to go away and eat as much hot curry as he could.
Even so, she could have asked. Mrs Madrigal would have told her.
All of the men have been told that dark blue suits and red ties look best on television.
They wasted 20 minutes walking in the wrong direction, a public inquiry in Cardiff was told.

С другой стороны, если после 'tell' следует предложное словосочетание или словосочетание с именем существительным, суммирующие содержание чужой речи, мы можем сами решать, следует ли нам упоминать того, кто выслушивает чужую речь, или этого делать не недо. То же самое имеет место в том случае, когда после 'tell' следует оборот, вводимый словом, начинающимся на 'wh'. При этом данный оборот суммирует содержание чужой речи.

IT WAS DUSK when they entered Concepcion, and it was dark when they finally found the airport, a small brick building next to a narrow asphalt strip. Guy called Stephano, who instructed him to leave Patrick in the van, with the keys in the ignition, and walk away from it. Guy, the doctor, the driver, and another American eased away slowly while looking over their shoulders at the van. They found a spot a hundred yards away, under a large tree where they couldn't be seen. An hour passed.
Finally, a King Air with American registration landed and taxied to the small terminal. Two pilots emerged and went inside the terminal. A moment later, they walked to the van, opened the doors, got inside, and drove it to a spot near their airplane.
Patrick was gently removed from the back of the van and loaded onto the turboprop. An Air Force medic was on board, and he immediately took possession of the prisoner. The two pilots returned the van to its original spot in the parking lot. Minutes later, the plane took off.

There was an ancient stereo system in the corner of the room, and I shuffled through my old tapes, hunting for something to listen to while I shaved. I found one marked FOLK MIX and put it in the tape player. I'd made it in high school and could barely remember what was on it. Bob Dylan sang about the lonesome death of Hattie Carroll, Tom Paxton sang about his old ramblin' pal, and then Dave Van Ronk started to sing about the cocaine blues. Halfway through the third verse I paused with my razor by my cheek. Got a headful of whiskey and a bellyful of gin, Dave sang in his rasping voice. Doctor say it kill me but he don't say when. And that was the answer, of course. A guilty conscience had lead me to assume that my mother would die immediately, and Staub had never corrected that assumption--how could he, when I had never even asked?--but it clearly wasn't true.

-iana

-iana употребляется для образования новых существительных от существительных, обозначающих людей или местность. Слова, образованные таким способом, обозначают коллекцию предметов или собрание данных о знаменитых людях и местах. Например, предметы, сделанные во времена королевы Виктории, будут обозначаться словом Victoriana, а книги и документы, имеющие отношение к Уинстону Черчиллю, - Churchilliana.
Орфографический комментарий: -iana участвует в образовании новых слов исключительно от существительных, оканчивающихся на согдасный. При словообразовании от существительных, оканчивающихся на гласный, последняя буква меняется на 'ana'.
ПРОДУКТИВНЫЙ ЭЛЕМЕНТ: новые слова с таким значением могут образовываться путём добавления суффикса -iana к существительным, особенно если они обозначают людей. Однако слова, образованные данным способом, не имеют высокой частотности употребления, и лишь некоторые из них относительно часто употребляются в современной устной и письменной речи.

ПРОДУКТИВНЫЙ ЭЛЕМЕНТ: -ibility употребляется для образования существительных от прилагательных, оканчивающихся на -ible. Существительные, образованные таким способом, указывают на состояние или качество, описываемое исходным прилагательным, или подчёркивают что-либо, что можно охарактеризовать данным состоянием или качеством. Например, accessibility “доступность» означает состояние, при котором обеспечивается досягаемость, подход или достижимость, а possibility означает «возможность, вероятность» совершения какого-либо действия.
Орфографический комментарий: -ible меняется на -ibility.

Обратите внимание, что sensibility “эмоциональность, способность сопереживать» не является существительным, образованным от слова sensible “благоразумный, здравомыслящий».
Sensibility “эмоциональность» говорит о способности человека испытывать глубокие чувства и сопереживать.
