1) "Партнер" Джона Гришама.

В жуткой грызне решался вопрос: кто виноват? Чарлз Боген, старший партнер, железной рукой управлявший фирмой, уверял, что деньги изначально были направлены на некий оффшорный счет — не лишенная логики догадка, с которой, по размышлении, пришлось согласиться и другим.
Речь шла о сумме в девяносто миллионов долларов, причем треть ее должна была остаться у партнеров. Спрятать такие огромные деньги в Билокси, где жили всего пятьдесят тысяч человек, не представлялось никакой возможности. В местном банке кто-нибудь наверняка проговорился бы, и новость мгновенно стала бы достоянием всего города. В глубине души каждый из четверки задыхался от зависти к мертвецу, несмотря на то что фирма строила планы в ближайшее время блеснуть своим богатством  — поговаривали даже о покупке шестиместного самолета.
Словом, Боген принял часть вины на себя. В свои сорок девять лет он был старшим из четверых и по крайней мере в настоящее время довольно прочно стоял на ногах. Кроме того, девять лет назад Боген лично принял на работу Патрика, в чем теперь горько раскаивался.

3) "Верхом на пуле" Стивен Кинг
Через две недели, я окончил колледж, у моей матери был новый удар - совсем небольшой. По настоятельной рекомендации доктора, она снова пыталась бросить курить, потом набрала пятьдесят фунтов и снова принялась за старое. "Вместо меня, подумай лучше о себе, ты должен устраивать свою жизнь," сказала она.
"Когда-нибудь ты женишься, Ал, поэтому лучше сбереги-ка деньги. Подумай о своей жизни."
"Ты моя жизнь," сказал я поцеловав ее. "Ты можешь сколько хочешь сопротивляться или спорить, но это так."

2.93 При использовании глаголов 'propose' и 'swear' мы также свободны решать, надо ли нам или не надо упомянуть в предложном словосочетании, начинающимся с 'to', того, кто выслушивает обращённую к нему речь. Это происходит в тех случаях, когда мы используем придаточное предложение, начинающееся с союза 'that'. Напротив, если мы используем инфинитивный оборот с частицей 'to', мы, как правило, не упоминаем этого человека.

Later, Franklin swore to his attorney that no records had ever been destroyed.
In 1977, a dean at Harvard swore that the university would never close, 'except for an act of God, like the end of the world, maybe.'
Then I, too, swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States.

2.94 С некоторыми другими глаголами имеет место противоположное: когда мы используем их в инфинитивном обороте с частицей 'to', мы упоминаем человека, выслушивающего чужую речь, в предложном словосочетании. Когда же мы используем данные глаголы в других структурах, мы сами можем решать, будем ли мы упоминать этого человека или не станем этого делать. Ниже приводится перечень основных глаголов этого типа; кроме того, даются предлоги, которые используются для упоминания человека, выслушивающего чужую речь.

Глагол 'cry out (to)' используется точно так же, как и эти глаголы.

Try to encourage it by appealing to her to help you in any way she can.
A Colonial Office circular appealed for 'loyal co-operation'.
He appealed for help to the Normans.
The mother appeared on television appealing about her son.

2.95 Некоторые глаголы используются таким способом, который в состоянии подчеркнуть, что в данном конкретном случае речь идёт как о том, кто говорит, так и том, кто выслушивает сказанное. В подобных случаях мы можем упомянуть того, кто выслушивает сказанное в словосочетании, начинающемся с предлога 'with'.

The vet agreed with me that a walk would help the wounds to drain.

Ниже приводится перечень основных глаголов, которые могут быть использованы подобным образом. Глаголы, помеченные звёздочкой (*), являются так называемыми взаимными глаголами, т.е., например, мы можем сказать как 'I quarrelled with my sister', так и 'My sister and I quarrelled'.

I've discussed the matter with my colleagues at our meeting this morning.
I commiserated with him over the recent news from the west where his favourite General St Clair had lost nearly a thousand men.
I quarrelled bitterly with my sister.

Фразовый глагол 'thrash out' является взаимным и используется таким же образом.

3)«RIDING THE BULLET» Stephen King
We had some pretty good years after that--seven of them in all. I didn't live with her, but I visited her almost every day. We played a lot of gin rummy and watched a lot of movies on the video recorder I bought her. Had a bucketload of laughs, as she liked to say. I don't know if I owe those years to George Staub or not, but they were good years. And my memory of the night I met Staub never faded and grew dreamlike, as I always expected it would; every incident, from the old man telling me to wish on the harvest moon to the fingers fumbling at my shirt as Staub passed his button on to me remained perfectly clear. And there came a day when I could no longer find that button. I knew I'd had it when I moved into my little apartment in Falmouth--I kept it in the top drawer of my bedside table, along with a couple of combs, my two sets of cuff links, and an old political button that SAID BILL CLINTON, THE SAFE SAX PRESIDENT--but then it came up missing. And when the telephone rang a day or two later, I knew why Mrs. McCurdy was crying. It was the bad news I'd never quite stopped expecting; fun is fun and done is done.

When the funeral was over, and the wake, and the seemingly endless line of mourners had finally come to its end, I went back to the little house in Harlow where my mother had spent her final few years, smoking and eating powdered doughnuts. It had been Jean and Alan Parker against the world; now it was just me.

-ics употребляется с неисчисляемыми существительными, относящимися к определённой области знаний. Например, physics “физика» - наука, изучающая материю и энергию, а acoustics “акустика» - наука о звуке.
Обратите внимание, что существительные, образованные подобным способом, как правило, сочетаются с глаголами в 3 лице единственного числа.

Physics is a means of understanding the way the world is designed.
