в Чикаго. После окончания Военной академии штата Мичиган служил в армии. Перепробовал
множество профессий - был военным инструктором, коммивояжером, полицейским на
железной дороге и т. д. К литературе обратился от безысходности, рассчитывая хотя
бы таким способом заработать денег, чтобы прокормить семью. В 1912 году опубликовал самый знаменитый из романов о Тарзане - "Тарзан из племени обезьян",
а год спустя сделался профессиональным писателем, то есть стал зарабатывать на
жизнь исключительно литературным трудом. На волне успеха основал несколько компаний
- "Эдгар Райс Берроуз, Инк.", "Берроуз-Тарзан Энтерпрайзиз",
"Берроуз-Тарзан Пикчерз". В 1933 году был избран мэром городка Малибу-Бич,
в годы второй мировой войны работал корреспондентом агентства "Юнайтед пресс"
в тихоокеанском регионе. За тридцать пять лет писательской карьеры опубликовал
свыше 70 романов и повестей. Самые знаменитые романы Берроуза - циклы произведений

И все же сначала – еще несколько слов о приключениях Джона
Картера.
О первом романе "марсианской трилогии" (в 1917 году роман
вышел отдельной книгой под названием "A Princess of Mars" – "Принцесса
Марса") часто повторяют как минимум две весьма распространенные глупости.
Первая – это роман "о полете на Марс". Вторая – это одна из первых "космических
опер". Ни то, ни другое в принципе не верно.
Понятие "космическойоперы"
претерпевало довольно заметные изменения на протяжении десятилетий, однако возникло
оно лишь в начале 30-х годов и в связи с совершенно другим типом фантастических
произведений – космической версией "лошадиных опер", то есть вестернов.
Что же касается темы "полета на Марс", то никакого полета, строго говоря,
герой Берроуза не совершал...
Собственно, гораздо больше оснований считаться
"марсианскими пионерами" у героев романов Перси Грега "Через Зодиак"
(Percy Greg, "Across the Zodiac", 1880), Роберта Кроми "Прыжок
в космос" (Robert Cromie, "A Plunge into Space", 1891) и Элсуорта
Дугласса "Брокер фараона" (Ellsworth Douglass, "Pharaoh's Broker",
1899) – персонажи этих книг достигли Марса на космических кораблях куда раньше,
чем туда прибыл герой Берроуза.
Среди "марсианских" предтеч Джона
Картера есть и еще один, самый таинственный. В 1905 году была опубликована книга
Эдвина Лестера Арнолда "Лейтенант Гулливар Джонс: Его каникулы" (Edwin
Lester Arnold, "Lieut. Gullivar Johnes: His Vacations"), которая вышла
только в Великобритании и не имела никакого успеха. Казалось бы, книга Арнолда
вряд ли могла попасть в руки Берроуза, однако совпадения сюжета "Каникул
Гулливара Джонса" с "марсианской трилогией" о Джоне Картере местами
просто поразительны. Гулливар Джонс, лейтенант армии США, попадает на Марс без
всякого космического корабля – его доставляет туда случайно найденный на улице
волшебный ковер. Лейтенант неосторожно пожелал оказаться "ну хоть на Марсе"
– и ковер немедленно исполнил его желание, предварительно герметически упаковав
героя. На Марсе Джонс обнаруживает некогда могущественную, а ныне гибнущую древнюю
цивилизацию, терзаемую набегами варваров. Джонс влюбляется в местную принцессу,
отправляется в поход по "Реке Мертвых" к полюсу Марса, а по возвращении
узнает, что еговозлюбленная находится в руках варваров. Конечно, лейтенант освобождает
ее и отправляется вместе с ней в Нью-Йорк на том же ковре-космолете...
В
другой книге Эдвина Арнолда - "Фра-финикиец" ("Phra thePhoenician",
1890) - описан бессмертный герой, который на протяжении тысячелетий раз за разом
возвращается к жизни в образе тридцатилетнего солдата, в совершенстве владеющего
мечом.
"Нет никаких свидетельств, - пишет Ричард Лупофф, - что Берроуз
читал книги Арнолда и был поклонником его творчества, однако даты издания книг
и содержащиеся в книгах совпадения определенно дают повод для размышлений".
Сходство
посылки второго романа Берроуза с киплинговской "Книгой джунглей" могло
бы вызвать сходные нарекания, однако Тарзан настолько не похож на Маугли, что
даже у ярых нелюбителей творчества Э.Р.Б. язык не поворачивается обвинить его
в каком бы то ни было заимствовании. И потом, время уже рассудило и героев, и
их авторов – Киплинг умер нобелевским лауреатом по литературе, зато книги Берроуза
издавались немыслимыми тиражами. Маугли остался героем сказки, а Тарзана Берроуз
- а затем и его эпигоны - отправил в бесконечный поиск приключений.
Популярность
Тарзана не нуждается даже в констатации. Если вы не читали романы о Тарзане, вы
видели фильмы о нем, если случайно не видели фильмы – вам наверняка попадался
по телевизору подростковый телесериал или диснеевский мультфильм... Американцы,
конечно, добавят в этот список нескончаемые серии комиксов.
Так или иначе,
Тарзан стал одним из самых популярных образов массовой культуры XX века.
А
началось все это безумие в том же самом 1912 году. В октябрьском номере "All
Story" этот роман был опубликован целиком под названием "Tarzan of the
Apes".
"Я писал его от руки на оборотах использованных бланков

Если вовремя
работы над "Принцессой Марса" Берроуз еще только приобретал навыки литературного
ремесла, то в "Тарзане" его талант Повелителя Приключений раскрылся
в полную силу. Роман читался тогда и читается сейчас с неубывающим интересом –
читается не только как каскад захватывающих адвентюр, но и как гимн человеческому
разуму, силе человеческого духа. Безусловно, это сказка – но временами она поражает
неожиданными поворотами вполне современной мысли, идеями, которые парадоксально
применимы в реальных обстоятельствах. Например, все, что касается обретения Тарзаном
способности общаться с другими людьми – сначала он научился выражаться письменно
(фантастика, чистая фантастика, даже не научная), затем волею обстоятельств научился
читать английский текст по-французски, затем перешел и на английский язык... Все
эти трюки парадоксально отражают реальные сложности, возникающие при развитии
коммуникативности детей в современном многоязычном социуме. Сейчас дети нередко
учатся сначала распознавать английские вывески магазинов и лишь потом соотносят
эти знания с русским алфавитом; они существуют сразу в нескольких языковых потоках,
и с ростом информационной связности мира мы все чаще и чаще будем наблюдать "тарзан-эффекты"
– результат воздействия на ребенка сложной языковой среды.
Берроуз, осознанно
или нет, провел над Тарзаном мысленный социокультурный эксперимент – конечно,
на уровне знаний своего времени. Он постулировал, что благородство изначально
присуще человеку (обычное грустное заблуждение уроженца романтического девятнадцатого
века, заблуждение, безжалостно растоптанное веком двадцатым) и что человек может
приспособиться к обстоятельствам почти любой сложности. Вряд ли можно рассматривать
как подтверждение его правоты, скажем, существующиеметодики обучения глухонемых
с рождения людей звуковой речи – но и отрицать, что это чудо в чем-то сродни "самообразованию"
человека-обезьяны, тоже не стоит. Скорее всего, создатель Тарзана даже отдаленно
не имел в виду ничего подобного, однако разве не служит сама принципиальная возможность
таких методик подтверждением главной идеи, которой роман просто сочится, – преклонением
перед бесконечной гибкостью человеческого сознания, его неограниченными возможностями?
Однако, несмотря на то, что в этом романе при желании можно обнаружить
и другие небезынтересные концепции, "Тарзан" был и остается прежде всего
произведением развлекательным. Если Жюль Верн использовал форму фантастико-приключенческого
романа для создания познавательного текста, если Герберт Уэллс использовал фантастические
посылки для художественного исследования новых социальных и философских концепций,
то Берроуз главной своей целью считал развлечение читателя. В его книгах не было
назидательности - но не было и мелочного желания подстроиться под вкусы публики.
Он удачно "попал" в ту самую манеру, которой ждала от журналов их аудитория.
Читатель
был готов к появлению Берроуза.
Читатель был готов платить за него деньги.
Но
в этом следовало убедить еще и издателей.
Хотя Боб Дэвис приобрел для публикации
в "AllStory" второй роман о Джоне Картере, "Боги Марса" ("The
Gods of Mars"), он отказался покупать "Возвращение Тарзана" ("The
Return of the Tarzan"). Впрочем, роман сразу же удалось пристроить в журнал
"New Story", издававшийся конкурирующим журнальным концерном "Street
& Smith".
Тогда Берроуз решил предложить свои романы книгоиздателям.
Если публикация в журнале приносила лишь разовый гонорар, то контракты на издание
книг могли давать доход постоянно - в виде отчислений за допечатки и переиздания.
Успех его произведений у журнальной аудитории позволял рассчитывать на то, что
и книги будут расходиться немалыми тиражами.
Издатели придерживались иной
точки зрения. "Тарзан",методично разосланный Берроузом по адресам всех
хоть сколько-нибудь солидных американских издательских компаний, был отвергнут
всеми без исключения. Никто из профессионалов не верил, что у этого журнального
чтива может быть хоть какое-то будущее.
Но ситуация изменилась раз и навсегда
после того, как "Тарзана" из номера в номер начала печатать нью-йоркская
газета "Evening World". Идея этой публикации принадлежала главному редактору
газеты Дж.Х. Теннанту (J.H. Tennant), и именноему Берроуз обязан тем, что его
романы прорвались в желанный мир книжных изданий. Публикация в популярной газете
сделала роман широко известным среди читателей, которые не принадлежали к постоянной
аудитории pulp-журналов. Романы Берроуза начали спрашивать у книготорговцев. Книготорговцы
переадресовали вопрос к издателям...
Кончилось тем, что к Берроузу обратились
из компании "A.C.McClurg", которая за несколько месяцев до того прислала
ему категорический отказ. Теперь интонация разговора была совсем иной: издательство
просило разрешения заключить договор на книжное издание романа.
Это была
победа. Большой, настоящий, стратегический успех.
Конечно, он согласился.
В
июне 1914 года "Тарзан из племени обезьян" был выпущен отдельным томом,
и начался многолетний издательский триумф Берроуза. "McClurg" на протяжении
полутора десятилетий ежегодно выкладывало на рынок как минимум одно первое книжное
издание какого-нибудь романа Берроуза, опубликованного перед этим в журнале –
а чаще два или три романа в год. Это были романы о Тарзане, романы из "марсианской"
серии о Джоне Картере, романы о мире Пеллюсидара, расположенного внутри земной
коры, другие исторические и приключенческие романы... Берроуз был идеальным автором
с точки зрения коммерческого книгоиздания. Он писал быстро, он продолжал свои
популярные сериалы и начинал сериалы новые (которые могли со временем стать популярными,
а могли и не стать), но продавались все равнохорошо.
Именно трудами Берроуза
окончательно оформилось целое направление фантастической беллетристики – приключенческое.
А сам Берроуз с тех пор считается одним из отцов-основателей фантастики XX века...
