Хотя он предпочитал не говорить о своём прошлом, но в их разговоре то и дело случались моменты когда это было неизбежно. В конце концов они были вместе только потому что он сбежал и теперь заново создавал себя. Любимой его темой была его юность в Нью Орлеане, а не взрослая жизнь от которой он бежал. Он почти никогда не считался со своей женой, и Ева знала, что она была таким типом людей, которых Патрик глубоко презирал. Это было неудачное замужество, и по мере того как всё ухудшалось, он утверждался в том, чтобы сбежать от нее.

Ей становилось очевидно что их желание поцарапать ее, или при удачном стечении обстоятельств даже выколоть ей глаза, было не самым главным, а в первую очередь кусты стремились сбить ее с пути, с тропинки к людям, украсть у нее возможность выбраться.

Триша хотела бросить следовать за ручьем, если ветки и корни кустарника станут слишком толстыми, но она решила всё равно идти рядом, чтобы хотя бы слышать шум ручья. Если шум ручья становился тише, она проползала на четвереньках под самыми толстыми ветками вместо того что отгибать их или пытаться найти проход между ними.


Тема: Прямая и косвенная речь (продолжение)


В уроке 441 (абзац 6) мы сталкиваемся с аналогичной трудностью: не совсем понятно, чья точка зрения передаётся здесь автором романа:

Her eyes met Bert’s, found no reflection there of what she was thinking – probably against her will, Alice believed; and, so as not to meet Alice’s, lowered themselves to the business of eating one golden crisp fatty chip after another.

Д.Лессинг проникает в мысли Пат, сообщая нам о её ощущениях (found no reflection there of what she was thinking) и намерениях (so as not meet Alice’s). Кроме того, мы находим также сообщение о мнении Алисы, которое касается Пат (probably against her will, Alice believed). В результате, у читателя складывается впечатление, что описываемая сцена представлена глазами Алисы. Тот факт, что Алиса может интерпретировать мысли, ощущения и намерения Пат, говорит читателю об их близости. Нетрудно заметить, что, когда Алиса интерпретирует мысли Берта, такой момент отсутствует.

В  уроке 442 (абзацы 21 и 23) мы сталкиваемся с несколько отличным использованием косвенного цитирования мыслей персонажей:

But there was something that didn’t fit.

Because, if that had been so, one could have expected Jasper too to have returned home.

Грамматическое время в обоих предложениях показывает, что они не представляют собой прямое цитирование мыслей персонажа. Тот факт, что и первое, и второе предложения начинаются с союза, наводит нас на мысль о том, что мы имеем здесь косвенные цитаты (см. урок  262). Данные предложения – это часть мыслей Алисы, которые не выражены непосредственно в её речи.

Crawling over the squelchy ground was the worst part (in the pine groves the ground was dry and nicely carpeted with needles; in the clenchy tangles it always seemed wet). Her pack dragged through the lacings of branches and bushes, sometimes actually getting stuck... and all the time, no matter how thick the going, the cloud of minges and noseeums hung and danced in front of her face.

-ular

-ular   употребляется для образования прилагательных от существительных. Прилагательные, образованные таким способом, обозначают признаки, качества или свойства предметов или понятий, связанные по смыслу со значениями исходных существительных. Например, muscular man «мускулистый мужчина» означает, что у него хорошо развиты мышцы, он крепкий и сильный, granular coffee «гранулированный кофе» означает, что он состоит из множества небольших зёрен. Слова, образованные данным способом, являются книжными и довольно редко употребляются в устной речи.

His shoulders were broad and muscular.

… a Nobel Prize winner in the field of molecular biology.

Most of the roads were still impassable to vehicular movements.
